Jasmine Harris struck, killed on I-10 in Baldwin County

BALDWIN, AL, (April 19, 2026) — A 19-year-old Mobile woman was killed early Sunday morning after being struck by a pickup truck on Interstate 10 in Baldwin County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

Authorities said Jasmine R. Harris was a passenger in a Mitsubishi Mirage that had been involved in a prior crash near milepost 43. At approximately 1 a.m., the vehicle was stopped in the roadway when Harris exited and was standing in a travel lane.

A 2023 GMC Sierra traveling along the interstate struck Harris and then collided with the disabled Mitsubishi. Harris sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 22-year-old driver of the GMC Sierra, a resident of Lucedale, Mississippi, was not injured in the crash.

Troopers reported significant damage to both vehicles, prompting the closure of multiple lanes during the initial response.

The Highway Patrol Division of ALEA continues to investigate the incident. No charges have been announced.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Alabama recorded 975 traffic fatalities in 2023, with pedestrian deaths representing an increasing portion of those incidents. According to Drive Safe Alabama, many fatal pedestrian crashes occur at night, with distraction often cited as a contributing factor. While urban areas see a higher number of incidents, rural roadways account for a greater share of fatalities.

The Governors Highway Safety Association notes that the growing popularity of SUVs and pickup trucks has contributed to the rise in pedestrian deaths, as these vehicles can make it more difficult for drivers to see individuals on the roadway. Nationwide, pedestrian fatalities have risen by nearly 60% since 2013.

“Roadway conditions, visibility, and lighting are all key factors that must be evaluated in these cases,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In some situations, accident reconstruction experts are necessary to determine exactly how the crash occurred. These resources are critical in helping victims’ families pursue compensation for their loss,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of a driver to yield to pedestrians,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal. The family of Jasmine Harris may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families who lose a loved one in a tragic accident may seek compensation for loss of income, companionship, emotional suffering, and funeral expenses,” Bond said.

An attorney can serve as an advocate for grieving families, guiding them through the legal process while protecting their rights.

“Insurance companies may attempt to settle quickly for less than a case is worth, but an experienced attorney will fight to ensure fair compensation and respectful treatment for the family,” Bond added.
