Jasmin Obregon faces charge in Harris Co hit-and-run collision

HARRIS, TX, (April 25, 2026) — A 31-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian early Saturday morning in Harris County.

According to Harris County Constable Precinct 4, deputies responded to the 12700 block of Kuykendahl Road near Rankin Road following reports of a collision. Upon arrival, they found a pedestrian critically injured.

The victim was transported to an area hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased.

Investigators identified Jasmin Obregon as the driver involved in the incident. Deputies located her shortly after the crash and detained her without incident.

Obregon was arrested and charged with failure to stop and render aid. She was booked into the Harris County Jail.

The case remains under active investigation by Harris County authorities.

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, hit-and-run crashes resulted in 2,046 deaths and 18,742 injuries statewide in 2023. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows Texas leads the nation in fatal hit-and-run incidents, accounting for nearly 10% of all such deaths in the United States.

TxDOT statistics indicate that hit-and-run crashes in Texas rose by about 12% from 2019 to 2023, with urban areas seeing the highest occurrence rates. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reports that approximately 70% of victims are pedestrians or cyclists, and most incidents take place between 6 p.m. and midnight.

Law enforcement agencies in Texas solve roughly 8% of hit-and-run cases, slightly below the national average of 10%, highlighting the challenges in identifying and prosecuting offenders.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized the importance of a timely and thorough independent investigation.

“Having the appropriate resources is critical when investigating a hit-and-run case and establishing negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Factors such as roadway conditions, signage visibility, and lighting must be carefully assessed. These steps are essential to help families who have lost loved ones obtain justice and financial compensation.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the family of the victim may have the right to file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for funeral costs, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“A wrongful death occurs when a fatality results from a negligent or wrongful act by another person or entity,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. “In cases where traffic fatalities are linked to unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, distraction, or driving under the influence, families often have the option to pursue civil action against the responsible party.”
