James William Fletcher faces charges in Lehigh Acres rollover

LEHIGH ACRES, FL, (September 23, 2026) – Two men were arrested and a woman was hospitalized following a high-speed police chase that ended in a crash early Wednesday morning in Lehigh Acres.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, troopers attempted to stop a vehicle on 40th Street Southwest and Sara Avenue at about 2:25 a.m.

The vehicle initially stopped but then fled onto State Road 82 near Gunnery Road. The driver, later identified as James William Fletcher, reportedly turned off the vehicle’s lights and accelerated to more than 100 mph, FHP said.

Troopers performed a PIT maneuver, causing the vehicle to enter the median and overturn.

A female passenger was hospitalized with unspecified injuries. Fletcher suffered minor injuries and was arrested after being released from the hospital.

Fletcher faces charges of cocaine possession, fleeing, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and driving an unregistered vehicle.

A backseat passenger also fled from troopers on foot before being apprehended and arrested, according to the FHP.

ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Traffic laws require motorists to comply when a law enforcement officer attempts to conduct a traffic stop. Authorities will examine whether proper protocol was followed by officers during the chase.

Candice Bond, an attorney specializing in accidents, has said in cases such as this that conducting an independent investigation as soon as possible is imperative to preserve evidence.

“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Your lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, locate witnesses to the crash and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide victims during this difficult time, while protecting their legal rights.”

The National Transportation Safety Board reports that more than 19,000 people are hurt annually in crashes in the United States.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the investigation’s results, the female passenger may be entitled to pursue a personal injury claim for medical and rehabilitation expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“Passengers who suffer injuries following a collision have several options when pursuing a personal injury lawsuit,” Bond said. “The passenger may open a claim with the insurance company of the vehicle they were occupied in if their driver is held liable. It has no impact on one’s own insurance policy since the claim is being made against a policy that is not their own.”

“When vehicle accidents result from unsafe driving, aggressive or distracted driving, speeding, or driving under the influence, victims are usually left with the option to pursue a civil action,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.
