James Ward Dies in Tractor Crash Near Flomaton, ALEA Says

FLOMATON, AL, (August 06, 2026) – James R. Ward, 72, of Flomaton, was tragically killed Thursday afternoon when a tractor-trailer struck his tractor in Escambia County, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

ALEA said Ward was operating a 1977 John Deere tractor that was towing a hay baler on Alabama 113, approximately 11 miles north of Flomaton. At about 1:50 p.m., a Kenworth tractor-trailer struck the tractor from behind near milepost 11.

Ward suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Kenworth tractor-trailer was injured and transported to D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital for treatment.

ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Alabama recorded 148 fatal crashes involving large trucks in 2022, the most recent year with finalized data.

Nationally, NHTSA reports that 40,901 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2023, marking the second consecutive year of declining fatalities. While detailed Alabama injury totals for large-truck crashes have not yet been released for 2023, federal and state data continue to show that heavy-vehicle collisions remain a significant safety concern on Alabama’s highways, particularly along rural corridors with substantial tractor-trailer traffic.

Candice Bond, an experienced tractor-trailer accident attorney, said that cases involving large trucks require a prompt, independent investigation to protect a victim’s rights.

“Tractor-trailer crashes are often complex, and many factors can play a role in these types of accidents,” said Bond, who is a Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“A skilled attorney can protect victims from trucking companies, which often send their own investigators to crash sites and possess a variety of resources they can utilize to defend a negligent truck driver.

“Your lawyer can advocate for you by hiring expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, locating witnesses to the crash, and reviewing applicable insurance coverage, while carefully guiding a victim through the legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The victim’s family may be able to pursue compensation for damages related to the death, including costs associated with the loss, lost income and companionship, and other hardships.

“A death to a family member after an accident is both tragic and devastating to a surviving family. The grief, shock, and anger can be overwhelming,” said Candice Bond, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

She added, “In addition to the emotional suffering of those left behind, losing someone close can create devastating financial consequences. The loss of income and funeral costs alone can have tragic consequences when a family member is lost.”
