Police: James Johnson Jr. killed in crash near Henry St in Hempstead

HEMPSTEAD, NY, (May 15, 2026) – A 76-year-old man tragically lost his life Friday morning after being struck by an SUV at a Hempstead intersection, according to police.

Authorities said James Johnson Jr. was hit by a Nissan Pathfinder at approximately 11 a.m. near the intersection of Jerusalem Avenue and Henry Street.

Police reported that the driver of the Pathfinder, identified only as a 46-year-old woman, remained at the scene following the collision and cooperated with investigators.

Johnson sustained critical injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The circumstances surrounding the fatal pedestrian accident remain under investigation by authorities.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The Homicide Squad is continuing to investigate the deadly crash.

Although motorists are generally required to yield to pedestrians, people on foot continue to face significant dangers on roadways across the country. According to Nassau County Police Department data, Nassau County recorded 485 pedestrian-related crashes in 2023, including 17 fatalities. That represented a 16% increase from 2022, when there were 418 pedestrian accidents and 15 deaths.

“In many situations, pedestrians have the right of way while crossing a street or intersection, even if they are not within a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized that in cases like this, an independent investigation conducted by an experienced attorney is crucial to help safeguard the rights of a victim’s family.

“Having the necessary resources is critical when investigating pedestrian accident cases and establishing negligence,” Bond said. “Roadway conditions, lighting, and visibility of traffic signs are all potential contributing factors that must be carefully evaluated. These steps are important in helping grieving families pursue the justice they deserve.”

The Governors Highway Safety Association reported 6,721 pedestrian deaths nationwide in 2020, an increase of 4.8% from the 6,412 deaths reported in 2019.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending results of the investigation, the family of James Johnson Jr. may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“The grief and emotional hardship following the sudden loss of a loved one in an accident can be devastating,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “We understand the challenges families endure during these tragic situations, and protecting their rights is extremely important. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s legal interests remain protected.”
