ROCKPORT, Texas — Authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred on May 23 on Business 35, half a mile north of U.S. 188. Texas Highway Patrol officials said a bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
James Guthrie, 51, was riding his bicycle southbound when a vehicle failed to stay in its lane and hit him. The impact threw him off his bicycle and into a ditch. Emergency responders arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A witness told officials that another man was seen going through Guthrie’s pockets before fleeing. Authorities are searching for both the suspect and the vehicle involved.
Investigators identified the suspect’s vehicle as a 2018-2021 BMW X4 with damage to the front grille area. Texas Highway Patrol officials continue reviewing leads and ask anyone with information to come forward.
