James Cook dies days after Cleveland SUV chain-reaction collision

CLEVELAND, OH, (April 24, 2026) – A 54-year-old Fairview Park man died from injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash involving a stolen SUV Friday evening in Cleveland.

According to authorities, the collision occurred at approximately 6 p.m. at the intersection of West 150th Street and Lorain Avenue. Investigators said a GMC SUV had been stolen from a driveway near West 130th Street just minutes before the crash. Witnesses reported the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed prior to impact.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and extricated one occupant trapped inside a vehicle. The victim, identified as James Cook, suffered traumatic cardiac arrest and was transported for medical care, where he was later pronounced dead at 9:10 a.m. Sunday.

Five additional individuals, ranging in age from 23 to 54, were injured and taken to local hospitals. Officials said one victim was initially in critical condition, another in serious condition, while two others were listed as stable.

Police arrested a 22-year-old suspect who now faces charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault. The individual remains in custody on a $50,000 bond.

The Cleveland Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

“It is essential to determine the precise cause of accidents like these. An attorney can examine insurance policies, consult expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and identify witnesses. We help guide victims’ families through every step,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

Bond emphasized that independent investigations play a key role in preserving critical evidence.

“Beyond the police report, an attorney will assess all contributing factors,” Bond added. “This includes reviewing driver histories, consulting experts, locating witnesses, and analyzing insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, a lawyer helps families navigate what can be a complex legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of James Cook may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The grief and emotional toll after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face during such times, and safeguarding their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will monitor the investigation and help ensure the family’s legal rights and best interests are protected,” added Formica.
