Jakob Esperum killed in Portland car crash into Willamette River

PORTLAND, OR, (April 6, 2026) – Authorities have identified a Beavercreek man as one of four victims in a fatal crash involving a vehicle that entered the Willamette River early Sunday.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, the incident began shortly after 2 a.m. when an officer observed a vehicle running red lights and traveling the wrong way. The driver fled from an attempted traffic stop and continued through Waterfront Park before the vehicle plunged into the river.

One occupant was rescued with injuries not considered life-threatening, while two others were recovered from the water shortly after the vehicle submerged. Officials later confirmed 20-year-old Jakob Esperum as the fourth occupant.

Police stated that the officer did not engage in a pursuit. Recovery efforts for the submerged vehicle are ongoing with assistance from a specialized contractor.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

“It is essential to determine the precise cause of crashes like this,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

She explained that attorneys have the resources to review insurance policies, engage expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and locate key witnesses. An independent investigation plays a critical role in preserving evidence.

“In addition to official police findings, an attorney can thoroughly examine all contributing factors,” Bond said. “Legal professionals can analyze driver history, consult experts, identify witnesses, and assess insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney helps guide families through what can be a complex and challenging process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Jakob Esperum may be eligible to file a wrongful death claim. Surviving loved ones may pursue compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and pain and suffering resulting from the tragedy.

“The emotional toll after losing a loved one in an accident can be devastating,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the hardships families endure, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed on the investigation and work to ensure the family’s legal rights and best interests are upheld,” Formica added.
