Jacob Burgess Hurt After Tesla Strikes Tree and Burns in Ohio

Goshen Twp, OH (January 08, 2026) – An Urbana man was injured Thursday in a fiery single-vehicle crash in Goshen Township, according to the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Jacob Burgess was a passenger in a Tesla traveling east on State Route 161 near State Route 559 when the vehicle lost control and exited the left side of the roadway. The Tesla struck an electrical box before re-entering the road, leaving the right side of the roadway, and colliding with a tree.

The impact caused the vehicle to catch fire. Burgess was transported to Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana with unspecified injuries. His condition was not immediately available. The driver was cited for failure to control.

SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Authorities reported that the vehicle was operating in full automation mode at the time of the crash. The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.

Single-vehicle collisions may occur for a variety of reasons, including impairment, distracted or fatigued driving, or reckless behavior behind the wheel.

Candice Bond, a well-respected accident attorney, said that in cases such as this, it is critical to initiate an independent investigation promptly in order to preserve key evidence.

“Beyond the police report, an attorney will conduct a detailed review of all factors that may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Legal counsel has the resources to retain expert witnesses, perform driver background checks, identify witnesses, and examine applicable insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can compassionately guide victims through the process while safeguarding their legal rights.”

The National Transportation Safety Board reports that more than 19,000 people are injured each year in crashes across the United States, though many of these incidents are considered preventable.

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Jacob Burgess may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim for damages such as medical and rehabilitation expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“Passengers injured in motor vehicle crashes often have multiple avenues available when pursuing a personal injury claim,” said Bond. “If the driver of the vehicle is found liable, a passenger may file a claim against that driver’s insurance policy without affecting their own coverage.”

“When crashes are caused by unsafe, aggressive, or distracted driving, speeding, or driving under the influence, injured parties are often left with the option of pursuing a civil action,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.
