Police: Jacob Belarmino charged after striking man in Batavia crosswalk

BATAVIA, IL, (April 10, 2026) – A 69-year-old pedestrian was injured in a hit-and-run roadway incident early Friday morning in Batavia, and a suspect has been taken into custody.

According to the Batavia Police Department, the incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. when a Toyota Highlander traveling northbound on Route 25 struck the man in a crosswalk while turning onto East Wilson Street.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries.

Authorities said the driver fled the scene, but officers later located and arrested 28-year-old Jacob Belarmino of North Aurora. He faces multiple charges, including felony leaving the scene of an injury accident.

The case remains under investigation.

HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Leaving the scene of a traffic incident is illegal, yet statistics show that about 11 percent of all roadway incidents involve a hit-and-run driver.

By law, motorists involved in an incident must remain at the scene until authorities arrive. However, data indicates that more than one such incident occurs every minute across the United States. Drivers often flee due to intoxication, lack of a valid license, or fear of arrest.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run and pedestrian accident attorney, emphasized that in these cases, a timely independent investigation is essential to protect the rights of victims.

“Having the proper resources is critical to thoroughly investigate a hit-and-run case and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Factors such as road conditions, signage visibility, and lighting must be carefully evaluated. These steps are necessary to help injured victims obtain justice and fair compensation.”

“Time is critical in cases like this, and it is important that evidence is reviewed promptly.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal, noted that the stress following an injury can be overwhelming and affect all aspects of life.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when filing a personal injury claim so that negotiations with insurance companies can be handled effectively,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often attempt to settle quickly for far less than a claim’s true value. An attorney will advocate strongly to ensure that victims are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
