Jack O’Shea fatally struck in Durham e-bike accident, police say

DURHAM, NC (April 18, 2026) – A 15-year-old boy was killed Saturday night in Durham after being struck by an allegedly impaired driver while riding an electric bicycle, police said.

According to the Durham Police Department, Jack O’Shea was traveling on an e-bike around 9 p.m. near the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane when he was hit by a Ford Explorer. Authorities said the driver, identified as 26-year-old Joseph Savarino, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired following the crash.

Police said the collision proved fatal for Jack, who was pronounced dead after emergency response efforts at the scene. Savarino, who is reportedly the grandson of former Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, remains facing impaired driving charges as the investigation continues.

Jack O’Shea was a freshman at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh and played on the JV Gold baseball team. School officials and classmates described him as a dedicated student-athlete.

In a statement shared on social media, Jack’s mother, Allison O’Shea, remembered her son as “perfect, smart, athletic, fearless and handsome,” adding that he had attended church and played two baseball games earlier that same day before going on a bike ride with friends.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham, followed by a celebration of life at Croasdaile Country Club.

FATAL DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Public records show Savarino had a 0.11 blood alcohol content in his breathalyzer test. Records show Savarino admitted to authorities that he drank earlier in the night.

The death of the teen underscores the dangers of drunk driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), almost 30 people die each day in the U.S. in drunk-driving crashes, which is one person every 50 minutes. More than 10,000 people die in drunk-driving crashes each year.

An independent investigation will be required to determine any additional contributing factors in the case.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, was interviewed and shared her perspective on incidents such as this one.

“Separate from criminal charges, a victim’s family may be entitled to compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Beyond the work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-examine key witnesses, review any available surveillance footage from the crash scene, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide grieving families during this difficult time, protect their legal rights, and help ensure that impaired drivers are held accountable for their actions.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending results of the investigation, the family of Jack O’Shea may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim for medical and funeral expenses, loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“An incident is considered a wrongful death when a person or entity commits a negligent or wrongful act that leads to another person’s death,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “When fatal crashes are caused by unsafe driving behaviors such as distraction, speeding, aggressive driving, or driving under the influence, surviving family members are often left with the option of pursuing a civil lawsuit against the responsible driver.”
