DURHAM, NC (April 18, 2026) – A 15-year-old boy was killed Saturday night in Durham after being struck by an allegedly impaired driver while riding an electric bicycle, police said.
According to the Durham Police Department, Jack O’Shea was traveling on an e-bike around 9 p.m. near the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane when he was hit by a Ford Explorer. Authorities said the driver, identified as 26-year-old Joseph Savarino, was arrested and charged with driving while impaired following the crash.
Police said the collision proved fatal for Jack, who was pronounced dead after emergency response efforts at the scene. Savarino, who is reportedly the grandson of former Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, remains facing impaired driving charges as the investigation continues.
Jack O’Shea was a freshman at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh and played on the JV Gold baseball team. School officials and classmates described him as a dedicated student-athlete.
In a statement shared on social media, Jack’s mother, Allison O’Shea, remembered her son as “perfect, smart, athletic, fearless and handsome,” adding that he had attended church and played two baseball games earlier that same day before going on a bike ride with friends.
A funeral Mass is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham, followed by a celebration of life at Croasdaile Country Club.
