WSP: Jack Haworth Dies in Benton County Highway 221 Crash

PATERSON, WA, January 15, 2026 — An 81-year-old Prosser man was killed early Thursday in a two-vehicle crash on a foggy stretch of Highway 221 in rural Benton County, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred around 6:45 a.m. near milepost 8, approximately eight miles north of Paterson. A northbound Toyota Tacoma was struck from behind by a Ford Expedition traveling in the same direction.

The impact forced the Tacoma off the roadway, causing it to roll over. The driver of the Tacoma, identified as Jack F. Haworth, died from his injuries. The driver of the Ford Expedition, a Sunnyside man, was injured but not hospitalized. The investigation remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Traffic fatalities continue to rise nationwide, with driver behavior playing a central role. Factors such as speeding, impaired driving involving alcohol or drugs, and distracted driving—particularly cellphone use—remain leading contributors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 8,055 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes during the first quarter of 2025.

As investigators work to determine the cause and responsibility for the collision, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of conducting an independent investigation led by a skilled legal professional.

“Beyond the work performed by law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview key witnesses, review surveillance or traffic camera footage, and obtain phone and text records of the potentially responsible party,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

Bond added that time is critical in fatal crash cases, and families must be assured that evidence is collected and evaluated promptly and thoroughly.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, family members of Jack F. Haworth may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Survivors may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.

“We recognize that the loss of a loved one is not only emotionally devastating but can also carry significant financial consequences,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal.

Formica noted that families who have lost someone due to another party’s negligence may benefit from consulting a wrongful death attorney to receive guidance and pursue the justice they deserve.
