Isaiah Washington killed in Scott County crash on Highway 13

SCOTT, MS, (April 18, 2026) – A 16-year-old passenger was killed late Saturday night in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 13 in Scott County, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP).

Authorities identified the victim as Isaiah Washington. Investigators said Washington was traveling in a Chevrolet Malibu driven by a minor when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree at approximately 11:05 p.m.

Washington was transported to Ochsner Scott Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He was a student at Morton High School and a member of the school’s football team.

Officials reported that three other passengers, all minors, sustained injuries in the crash. Their conditions have not been released.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the accident.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Single-vehicle crashes account for nearly half of all traffic-related deaths in the United States each year.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that many such accidents occur when a vehicle leaves the roadway and collides with fixed objects like trees, guardrails, signs, or utility poles. Alongside law enforcement efforts, Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst with Accident Injury News, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation to protect the rights of grieving families.

“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully examine all factors that may have contributed to the crash,” said Bond. “Legal counsel has the ability to engage expert witnesses, conduct driver background checks, identify witnesses, and review insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide a family through this difficult time while ensuring their legal rights and interests are protected.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Isaiah Washington may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims in fatal accidents can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“We understand the hardships families endure after such tragic losses, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney can follow the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are represented. Relatives of victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a catastrophic accident.”
