Iowa Park crash: Sylis Helmick killed, driver faces DUI charges

IOWA PARK, TX (April 18, 2026) – A 13-year-old boy was killed early Saturday morning in a crash involving a pickup truck in Iowa Park, authorities said.

According to the Iowa Park Police Department, Sylis Helmick was riding his bicycle in the 500 block of W. Highway Street at approximately 4:22 a.m. when he was struck by a Chevrolet pickup truck.

Officers arriving at the scene found the victim unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the location.

The driver, identified as Andrew Nicholas Tellez, remained at the scene and was later arrested. Authorities reported that Tellez showed signs of intoxication and allegedly stated he could not recall the crash. He was booked into Wichita County Jail with bond set at $100,000.

DUI ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Texas ranks among the worst states in the nation for drunk driving, with impaired drivers responsible for more than 42% of all traffic deaths. In 2023, the Texas Department of Transportation reported over 26,000 alcohol-related crashes that resulted in 1,138 fatalities and thousands of injuries. This equates to roughly three Texans losing their lives each day due to impaired driving incidents.

An independent investigation will be required to determine additional contributing factors, including blood-alcohol concentration levels and other evidence.

Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, emphasized the importance of a thorough legal review in such cases.

“Separate from criminal charges, a victim’s family may pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Beyond law enforcement efforts, an attorney can re-examine witness statements, review surveillance footage, and obtain phone and text records of the responsible party. Acting as an advocate, an attorney helps guide families through the legal process while ensuring accountability.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Sylis Helmick could pursue a wrongful death claim. Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said, “The grief and stress following such a loss can be overwhelming for families.”

“We recognize what families endure in these situations, and ensuring their rights are protected is critical. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help safeguard their best interests.”
