Based on data from the Texas Department of Transportation, head-on collisions resulted in 617 fatalities in Texas in 2024, making them “the deadliest type of crash.” This represents a slight increase from 613 head-on collision deaths in 2021.

Head-on crashes occur when vehicles hit from opposite directions or when a single vehicle crashes into a stationary object. Houston alone recorded 1,304 head-on collisions resulting in incapacitating injuries. Rural areas experience higher rates of head-on collisions due to higher speeds and less traffic separation.

“Contributing factors to be examined in head-on accidents include road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.
