Hwy 101 Greer Head-On Wreck Kills Max Wyatt Jr. and Deborah Wyatt

GREER, SC, (May 15, 2026) – Two Duncan residents were among five people killed early Friday morning in a head-on collision involving two SUVs near Greer, authorities said.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Max Douglas Wyatt Jr., 46, and Deborah Sue Wyatt, 50.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 1 a.m. on Highway 101 near Bellview Road Extension. Investigators said a Ford SUV traveling northbound collided head-on with a Toyota SUV traveling southbound.

Officials confirmed that two occupants inside the Ford SUV and three people traveling in the Toyota SUV suffered fatal injuries.

Authorities said Max and Deborah Wyatt were occupants of the Ford SUV.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Head-on crashes are less frequent compared to other types of accidents but often deadly, causing a disproportionately high number of fatalities and severe injuries due to the combined force of impact. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 39,345 people died in traffic crashes in 2024.

Candice Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney, emphasized the importance of comprehensive and independent investigations following fatal crashes.

“Evidence gathered in the early stages of an investigation can play a critical role in determining what happened,” Bond said. “Accident reconstruction experts are sometimes utilized to evaluate vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and other contributing factors after a deadly collision.”

Bond added that these investigative measures may help families pursue justice and compensation after suffering a tragic loss.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Max Douglas Wyatt Jr. and Deborah Sue Wyatt may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives may seek damages for emotional suffering, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship after a fatal accident.

“The sorrow and emotional hardship families face after losing loved ones unexpectedly can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We recognize the difficult circumstances families experience following tragedies like this, and protecting their rights and interests throughout the legal process is vital.”
