Hunter Clay Miller killed on I-84 by fleeing driver near Hood River

HOOD RIVER, OR, (April 26, 2026) — A 24-year-old Hermiston man, identified as Hunter Clay Miller, was killed early Sunday morning in a hit-and-run pedestrian crash in Hood River County.

According to police, Miller was on Interstate 84 near milepost 66 when he was struck by a westbound vehicle shortly before 6 a.m. The driver involved in the collision fled the scene, which is located about two miles east of Hood River.

Miller was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities confirmed.

During the investigation, officers located a Harley-Davidson motorcycle several miles east of the crash site. However, officials have not yet determined whether the motorcycle was connected to Miller.

The incident remains under active investigation as authorities work to identify the driver responsible.

FATAL PEDESTRIAN HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The investigation into Miller’s death is ongoing. Authorities say the driver who struck him and fled the scene will likely face criminal charges once identified. Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime, and data shows that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roadways.

Many drivers flee after a crash due to intoxication, lack of a valid license, or fear of arrest if they remain at the scene.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized the importance of a timely and independent investigation in such cases.

“Having the right resources is critical when investigating a hit-and-run case and establishing negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must be carefully reviewed. These steps are essential in helping families seek justice and financial compensation after losing a loved one. An attorney can also play a key role in ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.”

Approximately 2,000 people lose their lives each year in hit-and-run crashes across the United States. Even more concerning, fatalities from such incidents have risen by about 7% annually since 2009.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the family of Hunter Clay Miller may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim for medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.

“A wrongful death occurs when a person or entity causes a fatality through a negligent or wrongful act,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “In cases where fatal crashes result from unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, hit-and-run, or driving under the influence, families often have the option to file a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”
