Houston Pedestrian Crash Claims Life of Richard Acuna

HOUSTON, TX, January 05, 2026 – A pedestrian was killed late Monday night after being struck by a vehicle on a northwest Houston roadway, according to police.

The victim was identified by family members as Richard Acuna, 29. The crash occurred around 11:35 p.m. in the 13700 block of Clay Road near the Addicks Reservoir.

Houston Police Department investigators said Acuna was attempting to cross the roadway when he was hit by a black Honda Accord. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities reported that the driver remained at the scene following the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are asking anyone with dashcam or surveillance footage to contact investigators.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Walking along American roadways has become increasingly hazardous in recent decades, driven in part by the rise of larger vehicles such as SUVs and pickup trucks, roadway designs that emphasize speed, and reckless driving behavior. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 84 percent of pedestrian fatalities in 2023 occurred in urban areas, compared to 59 percent in 1975.

“In many situations, pedestrians have the legal right of way when crossing a street or intersection, even when a crosswalk is not clearly marked,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, a Managing Partner of Bond Legal, explained that incidents like this often require an independent investigation by a qualified attorney to help safeguard the rights of the victim and their family.

“Having appropriate investigative resources is critical in pedestrian crash cases to ensure evidence is properly gathered, reviewed, and preserved so authorities can determine whether negligence was a factor,” Bond added.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the investigation, the family of Richard Acuna may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim for the loss of love, companionship, and related damages.

“The emotional strain following the sudden loss of a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We understand the difficult challenges families face after such tragedies, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and work to ensure that a family’s rights and best interests are fully protected.”
