Fatal Houston hit-and-run accident claims life of Sincere Barrette

HOUSTON, TX, (March 31, 2026) — A 24-year-old man was killed early Saturday morning in a hit-and-run crash in Houston, according to police.

Authorities identified the victim as Sincere Barrette. Investigators said he was driving a gray Chevrolet Malibu southbound on West Loop South when he collided with a gray Toyota Highlander that was pulling onto the shoulder shortly after 5 a.m.

After the initial crash, Barrette exited his vehicle to assess the damage. At that time, an unknown vehicle struck him and fled the scene without stopping.

Barrette was pronounced dead at the scene by Houston Fire Department paramedics. The driver of the Highlander was not injured and remained at the scene as investigators continue their search for the suspect.

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, hit-and-run crashes killed 2,046 people and injured 18,742 others across the state in 2023. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that Texas leads the nation in fatal hit-and-run accidents, accounting for nearly 10% of all U.S. hit-and-run fatalities.

TxDOT data shows that hit-and-run incidents in Texas rose by approximately 12% between 2019 and 2023, with urban areas reporting the highest numbers. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety notes that about 70% of victims are pedestrians or cyclists, with most crashes occurring between 6 p.m. and midnight.

Law enforcement agencies in Texas solve roughly 8% of hit-and-run cases, slightly below the national average of 10%, highlighting the challenges in identifying offenders.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized that in cases like this, it is crucial to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to safeguard the rights of victims and their families.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important in order to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors that must be carefully evaluated. These steps are essential to help families seek justice and financial compensation after losing a loved one.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Sincere Barrette may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“An incident qualifies as wrongful death when a person or entity’s negligent or wrongful actions result in someone’s death,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. “When fatal crashes are caused by unsafe driving behaviors such as speeding, distraction, or impairment, families are often left with the option to file a civil lawsuit against the responsible party.”
