Hit-and-run in Hammond kills Michael Ribando, TPSO reports

HAMMOND, LA (April 02, 2026) – A Hammond man died Thursday after being struck by two vehicles in a crash that occurred the previous night.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, Michael Ribando Jr., 46, was riding a bicycle on North Baptist Road near Sunset Acres at approximately 11:15 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a vehicle.

The first driver remained at the scene and reported the incident. However, a second vehicle traveling in the opposite direction struck Ribando again. That driver briefly stopped before fleeing, last seen turning onto Wardline Road.

Ribando was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities continue to search for the second driver.

FATAL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

In many hit-and-run cases, at-fault drivers attempt to avoid responsibility by fleeing the scene, believing they can escape consequences. However, once identified, they often face serious criminal charges.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a crime, and statistics show that more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roadways.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, stressed the importance of a prompt and independent investigation to protect victims’ rights.

“Having the necessary resources is crucial to properly investigate a hit-and-run case and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“Factors such as roadway conditions, visibility, and lighting must be thoroughly examined,” Bond added.

These efforts are essential in helping families who have lost a loved one pursue justice and obtain rightful compensation.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Michael Ribando could pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional distress, and other damages following a tragic accident.

“The grief and stress following such a loss can be extremely difficult,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We recognize the hardships families endure, and protecting their rights is critical. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed on the investigation and help ensure the family’s legal interests are fully represented,” Formica added.
