Hit-and-run crash in West Palm Beach injures Elba Torres

WEST PALM BEACH, FL (February 28, 2026) – Authorities are searching for a driver who fled on foot following a violent collision Saturday that left two people hospitalized at a major intersection in West Palm Beach.

According to investigators, a southbound vehicle failed to slow for a red light at Forest Hill Boulevard and Military Trail and struck the rear of another vehicle that was stopped in the center lane. The impact pushed both vehicles through the intersection.

The driver of the striking vehicle reportedly fled eastbound on foot before deputies arrived at the scene.

Elba Torres, 49, of Port St. Lucie, was riding in the struck vehicle and sustained serious injuries. The driver of that vehicle suffered critical injuries. Both victims were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment.

The investigation remains ongoing as deputies work to identify and locate the fleeing driver.

HIT-AND-RUN INVESTIGATION

Leaving the scene of an accident is a criminal offense, and data indicates that approximately 11 percent of all crashes involve a hit-and-run driver. In many situations, at-fault motorists attempt to evade responsibility by fleeing, but they can still face serious charges once identified.

Attorney Candice Bond stressed the importance of conducting a timely and thorough independent investigation to safeguard a victim’s legal rights. “Having the proper resources is extremely important to investigate a hit-and-run accident case and prove negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting are all possible contributing factors that must be fully considered. These procedures are necessary for helping someone who has been injured by a hit-and-run driver receive the justice and monetary compensation that they deserve.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending an investigation, Elba Torres may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, explained that the aftermath of a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting every aspect of a person’s life, including family responsibilities, employment, financial stability, and overall well-being.

“It is vital for victims to hire an attorney when filing a personal injury claim, which allows them to negotiate with an insurance company for a client,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims to settle for a quick payout for far less than the case is worth. However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their clients to ensure that they are treated with respect and compensated fairly.”
