Hit-run crash in Rancho Mirage kills Teresa Bowlin, Driver arrested

RANCHO MIRAGE, CA, (May 16, 2026) – A 57-year-old Cathedral City woman died Saturday morning following a two-vehicle crash that was later classified as a hit-and-run in Rancho Mirage, authorities said.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Teresa Bowlin.

Investigators said Bowlin’s vehicle collided with another car shortly after 8 a.m. at the intersection of Dinah Shore Drive and George Montgomery Way.

Bowlin suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the other driver fled the crash site immediately after the collision but was later located and arrested. The suspect was booked into the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of murder and felony hit-and-run.

Officials said the circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

California law clearly makes it a criminal offense to leave the scene of a crash, yet hit-and-run incidents continue to occur at alarming rates, often leaving victims without immediate aid. Reports indicate that an average of 682,000 hit-and-run crashes have taken place annually since 2006.

While several factors contribute to traffic fatalities, driver behavior remains a leading cause, including speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving, particularly involving cellphone use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that 8,055 lives were lost in motor vehicle crashes during the first quarter of 2025.

As authorities continue to examine the circumstances of the collision, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of a separate, independent investigation.

“Alongside law enforcement efforts, an attorney can re-examine key witnesses, review any available surveillance footage, and obtain cellphone or digital records relevant to the incident,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Time is critical in cases like this, and families must ensure all evidence is preserved and thoroughly reviewed without delay.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family members of Teresa Bowlin may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for emotional distress, loss of companionship, and other damages resulting from a fatal crash.

“We understand that losing a loved one is not only an emotional tragedy but also a financial burden,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel with Bond Legal. “If your loved one has been killed due to someone else’s negligence, seeking legal guidance can help ensure you obtain the justice you deserve.”

“Insurance companies may attempt to minimize or deny claims, offering settlements far below what families are entitled to,” Formica added. “An experienced attorney can protect your rights and help ensure fair treatment throughout the process.”
