Head-On Hawaii Island Crash Kills Troy Rasse, Injures Four

HAWAII, HI, (May 15, 2026) – A head-on collision involving two pickup trucks Friday afternoon on Hawaii Island claimed the lives of two people and left several others injured, according to police.

Investigators said a 2018 Toyota Tacoma was traveling westbound on Daniel K. Inouye Highway at approximately 3:38 p.m. when the driver reportedly lost control while navigating a curve on the wet roadway.

Authorities said the Toyota crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with an eastbound 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 towing a mini excavator on a trailer.

A passenger in the Toyota, identified as 29-year-old Troy Rasse of Pahoa, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. A second passenger, a 24-year-old Hilo resident, also died as a result of the collision.

Police said a third passenger in the Toyota and the driver of the Dodge sustained serious injuries and were flown to The Queen’s Medical Center for treatment. The Toyota driver and a passenger in the Dodge were hospitalized with injuries not considered life-threatening.

The crash remains under active investigation.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Head-on accidents are among the most severe types of motor vehicle crashes because of the force generated when two vehicles collide, often while traveling at high speeds.

Driver error remains the leading cause of head-on collisions. However, factors such as speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, poor roadway design, inexperienced motorists, and driver confusion can also contribute to these devastating accidents.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 36,640 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2025, including 129 fatalities in Hawaii, representing an increase of more than 25 percent from the previous year.

“Contributing factors to be examined include road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” added Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

“Time is of the essence in cases such as this, and the victim’s family must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Troy Rasse may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident such as this.

“The stress and sorrow can be extremely overwhelming after losing a loved one in an accident,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand just what families must go through, and having their rights protected is vital. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed on the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
