Head-On Collision in St. Petersburg Hurt Clifford Washington

ST. PETERSBURG, FL, (May 31, 2026) — A multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning in St. Petersburg left one person dead and two others seriously injured, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Authorities said the collision occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. near the intersection of 18th Avenue South and 29th Street South. Investigators reported that a Mercedes sedan traveling westbound on 18th Avenue South crossed into oncoming traffic and struck an eastbound Nissan head-on.

Following the initial impact, a westbound Oldsmobile collided with the front of the Nissan, creating a three-vehicle crash scene.

The driver of the Nissan was identified as Clifford Washington, 27. He was initially transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital St. Petersburg before being transferred to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of critical injuries.

A 26-year-old passenger riding in the Nissan died at Bayfront Hospital. Authorities also said the 43-year-old driver of the Mercedes sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized.

The St. Petersburg Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Additional details were not immediately available.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of motor vehicle accidents because of the tremendous force generated when two vehicles traveling at speed collide. These crashes frequently result in catastrophic injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and serious orthopedic trauma.

Driver error remains the leading cause of head-on crashes. However, factors such as speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, poor roadway design, inexperienced motorists, and driver confusion can also contribute to these accidents.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 2.2 million people suffered injuries in motor vehicle crashes nationwide in 2023.

“Road conditions, visibility, and lighting are all possible contributing factors considered and examined,” said Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal.

“An accident reconstruction team is sometimes needed to help piece together what happened. All of these resources are necessary for helping clients receive monetary compensation for damages or a loss following a collision,” added Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney.

“Time is of the essence in cases such as this, and the victim must ensure that evidence is reviewed efficiently.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Clifford Washington may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the physical, emotional, and financial burdens associated with a serious injury can affect every aspect of a victim’s life, including family, employment, and overall well-being.

“It is vital for victims to hire an attorney when filing a personal injury claim, which allows them to negotiate with an insurance company on behalf of a client,” Formica added.

“Insurance companies can be notoriously unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may accrue. An attorney can help. We protect the victims of these tragedies daily, forcing the insurance companies to pay for their mistakes,” he added.
