HEARTVILLE, IL, (April 27, 2026) – A head-on collision in Effingham County on Monday left one driver dead and another injured, according to Illinois State Police.
Authorities reported that the crash occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m. on U.S. 45, just south of Heartville, when a northbound vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a southbound vehicle. Weather conditions at the time included strong winds and heavy rainfall, reducing visibility.
The southbound driver, 45-year-old Miguel Garcia-Gregorio of Flora, was transported to HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital and later transferred to a regional trauma center. A passenger in his vehicle was treated at St. Anthony’s and released.
The northbound driver, a 61-year-old man from rural Dieterich, was also taken to St. Anthony’s, where he was pronounced dead at 2:36 p.m. in the emergency room.
Toxicology samples were collected, and results are expected within approximately three weeks. The Illinois State Police and the Effingham County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the crash.
