Head-on accident near Sandy injures Sally West on Hwy 26

SANDY, OR, (April 30, 2026) – A 45-year-old Redmond woman was seriously injured and her passenger killed Thursday evening in a head-on crash along Highway 26 near Sandy, according to Oregon State Police.

Troopers said a Toyota Tacoma was traveling eastbound near milepost 28 at approximately 7:30 p.m. when the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle crossed into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a Subaru Outback.

Sally Caitlin West, who was driving the Subaru, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to an area hospital for treatment.

A 42-year-old Redmond man, who was a passenger in the Subaru, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the 18-year-old driver of the Tacoma, from Whitefish, Montana, was not injured and remained at the scene, cooperating with investigators.

Oregon State Police have not announced whether charges will be filed. The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Drowsy driving incidents often occur without visible warning signs such as braking or evasive action, as vehicles may drift across lanes when a driver briefly falls asleep. Across the United States, fatigue contributes to thousands of serious crashes annually, many involving head-on or high-speed impacts due to the driver’s lack of reaction. These types of collisions frequently follow a similar pattern: a quiet stretch of road, a momentary lapse in alertness, and a sudden, severe crash.

As authorities continue to investigate the cause and liability in this case, Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney and Managing Partner of Bond Legal, emphasized the importance of an independent legal review.

“In addition to the thorough work of law enforcement, an attorney can revisit key witnesses, examine any available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and texting records of the responsible party,” said Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News.

“Acting quickly is crucial in cases like this, and the victim’s family should ensure that all evidence is carefully and promptly evaluated.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Pending the results of the investigation, Sally West may have the option to pursue a personal injury claim. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, explained that the aftermath of a serious injury can create significant stress and disruption across many aspects of life, including family, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when pursuing a personal injury case, allowing proper negotiation with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often attempt to push quick settlements that do not reflect the full value of a claim. An attorney, however, will advocate strongly to ensure the victim is treated fairly and receives appropriate compensation.”
