Head-on accident in Malheur County kills Gary Diederich: OSP

MALHEUR, OR (April 14, 2026) — Two people were killed Tuesday night following a head-on collision on Highway 95 near Jordan Valley in Malheur County, according to Oregon State Police (OSP), including an Idaho resident identified as Gary Albert Diederich.

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 10:03 p.m. near milepost 101 when a southbound Honda Accord crossed the centerline and entered the northbound lane. The vehicle then collided head-on with a Dodge Ram pickup truck towing a utility trailer.

Diederich, 74, of Greencreek, Idaho, was driving the northbound pickup at the time of the crash. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, where he was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries.

The driver of the Honda Accord, a 27-year-old man from California, also died at the scene. His identity has not yet been publicly released pending family notification.

OSP officials stated that the cause of the crash remains under active investigation. No further details have been confirmed regarding what led the Honda to cross into oncoming traffic.

HEAD-ON CRASH INVESTIGATION

Head-on collisions are among the most severe types of crashes due to the combined force of vehicles often traveling at high speeds.

Driver error is the leading cause of such accidents, though other contributing factors include speeding, distraction, impairment, poor roadway design, and driver confusion.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 36,640 people died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2025, including 491 fatalities in Oregon.

“Investigators must evaluate contributing factors such as road conditions, visibility, and lighting,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

“In some cases, accident reconstruction teams are necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources play a key role in helping victims’ families pursue compensation following a crash,” added Bond.

“Time is critical in these cases, and families must ensure that all evidence is examined promptly and thoroughly.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Gary Diederich may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The emotional impact after losing a loved one in a crash can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand what families endure during such difficult times, and protecting their rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed about the investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.”
