NCSHP: Halvorsen Hurt in Head-On Collision on N.C. 16 in Wilkes

Wilkes County, NC (July 1, 2026) — A 60-year-old man was seriously injured in a head-on crash on N.C. 16 North in Wilkes County on Wednesday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Authorities said Martin Harry Halvorsen was driving a Ford Ranger pickup truck southbound at approximately 7:35 a.m. near Elisha Staley Road when he was struck by a Honda Civic driven by a 21-year-old man after the Civic traveled left of center.

Halvorsen was extracted from his vehicle by first responders and transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital for treatment. The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), left-of-center crashes frequently result in head-on collisions, which tend to be especially devastating.

These types of crashes account for around 10% of all fatal accidents in the U.S., even though they represent only about 2% of all collisions overall. Common causes include driver error, speeding, inexperience behind the wheel, and distracted driving.

Candice Bond, an experienced accident attorney, said that in cases such as this, it’s critical to have a seasoned lawyer launch an independent investigation right away to help preserve evidence.

“An attorney can gather the necessary evidence to help demonstrate that a driver’s conduct was reckless, which often requires drawing on a variety of resources,” said Bond, who serves as Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Beyond the work already being handled by law enforcement, an attorney can go back and re-interview key witnesses, review any available surveillance footage from the crash scene, and obtain phone and texting records belonging to the at-fault driver. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injured victim with compassion through this difficult time, all while protecting their rights.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Martin Harry Halvorsen may have grounds to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the stress and worry that follow a serious injury can be overwhelming, disrupting nearly every part of life — including family, work, finances, and overall quality of life.

“While no amount of money can undo the damage of a serious injury, it’s important for a victim to understand their rights and what they may be entitled to under the law,” Formica added. “The victim injured in this collision may be eligible to file an injury claim, potentially seeking recovery for damages including medical expenses, future medical care, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.”
