SAVANNAH, GA, (April 23, 2026) – A Lyft driver and his passenger were killed Thursday night in a crash involving a fleeing vehicle in Savannah, authorities confirmed.
According to officials, Chatham County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a black Chevrolet Trailblazer at approximately 9:54 p.m., but the driver fled westbound on Capital Street. The fleeing vehicle then ran a red light at Pennsylvania Avenue and struck the driver’s side of a Nissan Juke.
Habibullah Azizi, who was driving the Nissan Juke for Lyft, was pronounced dead at the scene. A 19-year-old passenger from Chicago was ejected during the crash and also died.
Authorities detained the Trailblazer’s driver and two passengers. The 37-year-old driver is facing multiple charges, including two counts of murder, two counts of homicide by vehicle, DUI, fleeing police, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, and other offenses. One passenger is also in custody and awaiting extradition.
The Georgia State Patrol is leading the crash reconstruction, while the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office continues a parallel investigation.
