Gregory King dies after e-bike crash with sedan in York: SCHP

YORK, SC, (April 26, 2026) — A 57-year-old York man, identified as Gregory Shane King, died Sunday evening after an electric bicycle collided with a sedan in York County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the electric bicycle was traveling east on West Alexander Love Highway near Rabbit Run Road at approximately 8:47 p.m. when the rider attempted to cross or turn onto the roadway. A westbound sedan then struck the bicycle.

King was transported to Piedmont Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Officials confirmed the sedan’s driver was not injured and remained at the scene following the crash.

Pathology and toxicology results are still pending.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the York County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the incident.

E-BICYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Electric bicycles have rapidly grown in use across the United States, but this increase has also been accompanied by a significant rise in injuries and fatalities. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that e-bike-related injuries treated in emergency departments rose from approximately 3,500 in 2017 to more than 34,000 in 2023. The American College of Surgeons has identified e-bike crashes as an emerging public safety concern, citing higher speeds and limited protective infrastructure as major risk factors.

“It is critical to determine the exact cause of these types of incidents. An attorney has the resources to review insurance coverage, consult expert witnesses, conduct background investigations, and identify witnesses,” said Bond, an experienced bicycle accident attorney. “We guide families through the legal process with care and attention.”

Independent investigations should be conducted quickly to preserve crucial evidence, Bond added.

“In addition to the official police report, an attorney will carefully analyze all contributing factors to the crash,” said Bond. “Legal counsel can secure expert analysis, locate witnesses, and review insurance policies to ensure a thorough investigation while supporting injured victims or their families through a complex process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Gregory King may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek damages for loss of companionship, emotional distress, pain and suffering, and funeral expenses following such a tragic incident.

“The emotional toll of losing a loved one in an accident can be devastating,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and ensuring their rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney will closely follow the investigation and help safeguard the family’s legal interests throughout the process.”
