Even when a driver believes they are not impaired, alcohol or drugs can significantly reduce reaction time, judgment, and coordination, increasing the likelihood of serious or fatal crashes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an average of approximately 10,850 people lost their lives each year in drunk-driving crashes between 2012 and 2021.
