Greenlawn cyclist injured in Subaru crash with Bryan Maldonado-Acosta

GREENLAWN, NY, (May 26, 2026) – Suffolk County Police Second Squad detectives are investigating a Tuesday afternoon bicycle collision in Greenlawn that left a 75-year-old bicyclist seriously injured.

Authorities said the crash occurred at approximately 1 p.m. at the intersection of Butterfield Drive and Pulaski Road.

According to investigators, the bicyclist was struck by a 2022 Subaru operated by 22-year-old Bryan Maldonado-Acosta of Huntington Station.

A Suffolk County Police helicopter airlifted the injured bicyclist to Stony Brook University Hospital, where the victim was admitted in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Police said Maldonado-Acosta was not injured in the collision.

Authorities impounded the Subaru for a safety inspection as detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Suffolk County Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Second Squad.

BICYCLE CRASH INVESTIGATION

Roadways can present serious hazards for bicyclists. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 46,195 cyclists were injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2022.

“Bicyclists are especially vulnerable on the roadway, and a number of factors can contribute to severe crashes,” said Candice Bond, a managing partner with Bond Legal.

“It is imperative to determine the exact cause of these types of accidents. An attorney has the resources to review applicable insurance coverage, hire expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and locate witnesses. We carefully guide the family of the victim through the process.”

Bond, an experienced bicycle accident attorney, noted that it is important to conduct an independent investigation quickly in order to help preserve evidence.

“In addition to a police report, an attorney will carefully review what factors may have contributed to the crash,” Bond said. “Your lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, conduct background checks, locate witnesses to the collision, and review applicable insurance coverage. Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injury victim through what can become a complicated process.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

A victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim pending the results of the investigation.

Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal, said, “Injured victims involved in a collision often pursue a personal injury claim to help cover medical expenses, future medical treatment, lost income, emotional trauma, and pain and suffering.”

“Insurance companies are often unconcerned with the mounting costs that an injured party may face. An attorney can help. We protect victims of these tragedies every day, helping ensure insurance companies are held accountable for their mistakes,” he added.
