SUMMERVILLE, SC, (April 11, 2026) — Authorities are searching for a suspect vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a cyclist Saturday in Summerville.
According to police, George Randall Shirar, 63, was riding his bicycle on East 3rd Street when he was struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene.
Shirar sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead following the crash. Investigators are actively working to locate the vehicle and driver involved.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Summerville Police Department at 843-875-1650 or submit tips via email at jbankey@summervillesc.gov.
Under the law, drivers involved in accidents are required to remain at the scene until authorities arrive. However, many flee due to factors such as impairment, lack of a valid license, or fear of legal consequences.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 4 million hit-and-run crashes occurred between 2018 and 2022, including over 12,000 fatal incidents.
