Gary Swanson killed in Los Angeles six-vehicle freeway accident

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 14, 2026) — A 61-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning in a six-vehicle collision on the northbound Golden State (5) Freeway in Los Angeles, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Authorities identified the victim as Gary Swanson. The crash occurred at approximately 8 a.m. near Soto Street.

Swanson suffered fatal injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said a second person was transported to a local hospital with injuries, although the extent of those injuries has not been released.

The cause of the six-vehicle crash has not yet been determined. The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

FATAL CRASH INVESTIGATION

The CHP will release a full report after it completes its investigation into the accident that claimed the life of Mr. Swanson.

In the meantime, Candice Bond said crashes such as this underscore the importance of an independent investigation by an experienced law firm to preserve evidence and protect the rights of a victim’s grieving family.

“In addition to the diligent work of law enforcement, an attorney can re-interview important witnesses, analyze any surveillance video from the scene of the crash, and obtain phone and texting records of the liable party,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help compassionately guide a family who has lost a loved one during this difficult time, as well as protect their legal rights and best interests.”

Each year, roughly 36,000 people die, and another 1.9 million people are injured in motor vehicle accidents in this country. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was the primary cause of fatal crashes last year, followed by the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication; failure to stay in the proper lane; failure to yield the right of way; and distracted driving.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Gary Swanson may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Surviving relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.

“We understand just what families are forced to go through, and having their rights protected is vital,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are protected. Relatives of wrongful death victims are entitled to seek damages for the loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident.”
