INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. — An 87-year-old Vermont man died Sunday afternoon when vehicles struck him on Interstate 95 South while he attempted to rescue a turtle.
Frank Quinn of Pawlet, Vermont., entered the highway around 4:20 p.m. and crossed southbound lanes on foot north of Sebastian Boulevard, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.
A driver attempted to slow down to avoid striking Quinn. A second vehicle struck the first vehicle from behind, causing the driver to lose control. The first vehicle then hit Quinn and crashed into a roadside fence.
Quinn died at the scene from crash-related injuries. No driver injuries were reported in the collision.
The crash shut down all southbound lanes for several hours following the incident.
