Ferndale Man Jeffrey Hugh Chalfant Dies in Laurel Road Crash

Ferndale, WA (June 21, 2026) — A 53-year-old Ferndale man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Sunday in Whatcom County.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office had not released the identity of the victim, but the King County Medical Examiner’s Office has since identified him as Jeffrey Hugh Chalfant.

The crash involved a collision between a pickup truck and a sedan at approximately 8:53 a.m. along the 900 block of West Laurel Road. No further details about the cause of the crash have been released by authorities.

Chalfant was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle following the collision, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Three other individuals were injured in the crash, including one person who was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham for treatment of unspecified injuries.

FATAL TWO-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Each year, an estimated 36,000 people lose their lives in motor vehicle accidents across the country. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that speeding remains the leading cause of fatal crashes, followed closely by impairment from alcohol, drugs, or medication; improper lane usage; failure to yield the right of way; and distracted driving.

For this reason, Candice Bond, a seasoned accident attorney, emphasized the importance of launching a swift, independent investigation in cases like this one to preserve critical evidence and safeguard the rights of victims’ families.

“As attorneys, it’s our responsibility to provide families who have lost a loved one in an accident with both legal guidance and meaningful support,” said Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “We work to protect your rights and ensure that statements made to police or insurance companies aren’t later used against you.”

Bond added, “An attorney will thoroughly examine the factors that may have contributed to the crash and has access to resources such as expert witnesses, driver background checks, and witness location services, along with a detailed review of applicable insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can offer families compassionate guidance during this incredibly difficult time while firmly protecting their legal rights and interests.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the outcome of the investigation, the family of Jeffrey Hugh Chalfant may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim covering medical and funeral costs, loss of love and companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional trauma.

“A death is classified as wrongful when a person or entity’s negligent or unlawful conduct directly leads to another person’s death,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “In cases where a vehicle accident fatality stems from reckless driving, aggressive or distracted behavior behind the wheel, speeding, or driving under the influence, surviving family members typically have the option to pursue a civil claim against the at-fault driver.”
