Felipe Lopez killed crossing Roscoe Boulevard in Winnetka

WINNETKA, CA, (September 12, 2026) – A 78-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle Saturday night while crossing a street in Winnetka, authorities said.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Felipe Lopez.

According to Los Angeles police, Lopez was struck shortly after 8 p.m. in the 20000 block of Roscoe Boulevard, just east of Winnetka Avenue. He was crossing the street in a crosswalk when he was hit.

The driver was traveling westbound on Roscoe Boulevard at the time of the crash. Lopez was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Each year, thousands of pedestrians are killed on U.S. roads, with factors including reckless driver behavior, inadequate infrastructure, and roads designed primarily for cars contributing to the problem. Between 2009 and 2023, pedestrian deaths increased 80%, while all other traffic fatalities rose 13%, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

“In most instances, pedestrians possess the right of way when crossing an intersection or a street regardless of if they are in a marked crosswalk,” said Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal, said an independent investigation conducted by a seasoned lawyer is important to help protect the rights of the victim’s family in cases such as this.

Possible contributing factors, including road conditions, signage visibility, and road lighting, should be carefully examined. Such procedures can help families who have lost a loved one pursue the justice they deserve.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of Felipe Lopez may be entitled to a wrongful death claim.

“Family members of wrongful death victims may seek damages for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic or catastrophic accident,” Formica said.

“Insurance companies often try to pressure victims into accepting a quick payout for far less than a case may be worth,” Formica noted. “However, an attorney will vigorously advocate for their client to ensure they are treated with respect and compensated fairly.”
