Police: Evelyn Plakal dies in Riverwatch Parkway Augusta high-speed crash

AUGUSTA, GA, (April 20, 2026) – A single-vehicle crash Monday evening in Augusta claimed the lives of two people in their 20s, including Evelyn Plakal, authorities said.

The crash occurred just before 6 p.m. along Riverwatch Parkway near Goodrich Street, close to mile marker 2. Deputies reported that a 23-year-old Buena Vista man was driving westbound at a high rate of speed when the vehicle lost control while navigating a curve.

The vehicle left the north shoulder, struck a guardrail, and traveled down an embankment toward Goodrich Street.

Evelyn Plakal, 22, of Elgin, South Carolina, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene along with the driver.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash and the factors that may have contributed to the incident.

FATAL SINGLE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Tragically, approximately 36,000 people lose their lives in motor vehicle accidents each year in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration identifies speeding as the leading cause of fatal crashes, followed by impairment, failure to maintain lane position, failure to yield, and distracted driving.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, explained that in cases like this, a comprehensive independent investigation by an experienced attorney is essential. This process enables victims and their families to effectively deal with insurance companies.

Bond, a national analyst for Accident Injury News, emphasized that while no financial recovery can replace a lost loved one, proper legal representation remains crucial.

“Insurance companies often attempt to push victims and their families into accepting quick settlements that are far below the true value of the claim,” Bond said. “Their goal is to limit payouts, often without considering the lasting emotional and financial impact on a family. Attorneys advocate strongly to ensure fair treatment and appropriate compensation.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Based on the details currently available, the family of Evelyn Plakal will likely have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim seeking damages for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and pain and suffering.

“A wrongful death claim is a civil lawsuit filed by the estate or surviving family members of the deceased to recover financial damages,” Bond explained. “It is separate from any criminal proceedings and follows its own legal process.”

“The passenger’s family may also pursue a claim through the insurance policy of the vehicle involved if the driver is found liable,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal. “This type of claim does not affect the claimant’s own insurance, as it is filed against another party’s policy.”
