Ethan Wood Hit, Killed by Semi on I-64 in St. Clair County

SAINT CLAIR, IL, (April 24, 2026) – A 35-year-old Glen Carbon man was killed Friday morning after being struck by a semi-truck along Interstate 64 in St. Clair County, authorities said.

The St. Clair County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Ethan D. Wood.

According to Illinois State Police (ISP), Wood was walking in the westbound lanes near mile marker 14, close to O’Fallon, at approximately 6:30 a.m. when he was hit by a semitrailer truck.

Wood was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to the incident. The crash remains under active investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Even crashes at lower speeds can be deadly for pedestrians, who lack protection such as airbags, seat belts, or reinforced vehicle structures. In 2023, there were 4,354 fatalities involving large trucks, with 17% of those victims being pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorcyclists, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Candice Bond, an experienced pedestrian accident attorney, noted that incidents like this are frequently linked to distracted driving, negligence, speeding, or failure to yield.

Multiple elements can contribute to a tractor-trailer collision, including driver fatigue, tire blowouts, excessive speed, lane departures, improper handling, and loss of vehicle control. “Truck crashes are often complex, with many contributing factors,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“An attorney can assist by engaging expert witnesses, reviewing driver histories, identifying witnesses, and analyzing insurance coverage, while helping guide a grieving family through the legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Ethan D. Wood may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and other damages resulting from a tragic accident.

“The grief and stress after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“We recognize the challenges families face, and ensuring their legal rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney can monitor the investigation and help safeguard those rights.”
