Police arrest Ernesto Salatiel Avina Rodriguez following injury crash in Coalinga

COALINGA, CA, (April 10, 2026) – One person was injured Friday evening in a hit-and-run crash involving an alleged intoxicated driver in Coalinga.

According to police, the crash occurred around 5:40 p.m. at Elm Avenue and Seventh Street. An unidentified victim driving a Honda Accord collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck. The impact left the Honda driver trapped inside the vehicle, requiring extrication by emergency responders before being transported to a hospital.

Authorities said the pickup driver, identified as Ernesto Salatiel Avina Rodriguez, fled the scene following the collision. Officers later located Rodriguez, who denied being under the influence. However, a breath test reportedly showed a blood alcohol concentration of .10%, above the legal limit.

Rodriguez was subsequently arrested and charged with felony DUI causing injury and felony hit-and-run. The incident remains under investigation.

DUI CRASH INVESTIGATION

Every year, approximately 300,000 innocent victims suffer injuries in drunk driving crashes, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

These types of collisions share a common factor: they are preventable. Driving under the influence significantly increases the risk for everyone on the roadway. Candice Bond, an experienced DUI accident attorney, weighed in on incidents like this.

“Separate from criminal charges, a victim may be eligible for compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “An attorney can help guide an injured victim through this difficult time, protect their legal rights, and work to ensure accountability for impaired drivers.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

The victim injured in this accident may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, explained that the stress following a serious injury can be overwhelming, affecting family life, employment, finances, and overall well-being.

“Although no amount of compensation can undo a serious injury, it is important that victims understand their legal rights and what they may be entitled to,” Formica said. “The injured party in this crash may be eligible to recover damages such as medical expenses, future care costs, pain and suffering, and emotional distress.”
