PLATTE COUNTY, Mo. — An 18-year-old Kansas City, Kansas, woman died in a car crash July 3 on Missouri 45.

The collision occurred about 3:50 p.m. on Missouri 45, north of Kisker Road, the Platte County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Emmelie Rodriguez was driving a 2018 Kia Rio northbound on the highway when it collided nearly head-on with a southbound 2024 BMW 230i.
Authorities pronounced Rodriguez dead at the scene. A 79-year-old Topeka man driving the BMW and a 69-year-old woman passenger both sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities continue investigating the cause of the fatal crash.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

In 2024, an estimated 39,345 people lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents across the United States, reflecting a decline from the 40,901 fatalities recorded a year earlier. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, this is the first time since 2020 that the annual death toll has dropped below 40,000.
