Ember Cuen Dies After Camping Trailer Collision at Oregon Campground

JEFFERSON, OR (May 29, 2026) — A tragic accident at Link Creek Campground near Suttle Lake claimed the life of 6-year-old Ember Cuen on Saturday afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said Ember Cuen, a Redmond resident, was walking toward the lake with a 5-year-old girl when a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer approached from behind. Authorities believe the children moved between the tow vehicle and the trailer from the right rear, entering a blind spot as the driver slowly backed up.

Family members and nearby campers immediately attempted life-saving measures after the incident. Deputies responded to the campground at approximately 2:30 p.m. and found Ember unresponsive.

Emergency personnel transported the child to the intersection of U.S. 20 and Suttle Lake Road, where she was airlifted to St. Charles Bend for advanced medical care. Despite efforts to save her life, Ember was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The 5-year-old girl was not struck and was not injured in the incident.

Authorities said the driver remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Deputies reported finding no signs of impairment or criminal conduct during their initial investigation.

The investigation remains ongoing. A fundraiser has been organized to assist Ember Cuen’s family during this difficult time.

PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Every year, many pedestrians lose their lives on U.S. roads. Approximately 3,304 pedestrians were struck and killed by drivers on U.S. roads in the first half of 2024, the Governors Highway Safety Association said in a report.

“Having access to the proper resources is critical when investigating a pedestrian accident and establishing whether negligence played a role,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and an experienced pedestrian accident attorney.

“Road conditions, visibility of signs, and available lighting are among the many factors that must be carefully reviewed during an investigation. These steps are essential in helping families who have lost a loved one pursue the justice they deserve,” Bond added.

“An accident reconstruction team may also be necessary to determine exactly what occurred. These resources are important in helping clients pursue compensation for damages or losses resulting from a collision,” said Bond, a national legal analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is almost always a driver’s duty to yield to any pedestrian,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The family of a victim may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Families who lose a loved one in a wrongful death incident may be eligible to seek compensation for loss of income, loss of companionship, pain and suffering, funeral costs, and emotional distress,” Formica said.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can help guide grieving families through a difficult period while working to protect their legal rights and interests.

“Insurance companies frequently attempt to convince victims to accept quick settlements that are far below the true value of a case,” Formica noted. “An attorney will strongly advocate on behalf of a client to help ensure fair treatment and appropriate compensation.”
