Emardville Twp semi-truck crash with Robert Nichols kills 18-year-old

EMARDVILLE TOWNSHIP, MN, January 07, 2026 — An 18-year-old man from Thief River Falls was killed Wednesday morning in a head-on collision involving a semi-truck in Emardville Township, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

Authorities said the teen was driving a Nissan Frontier pickup truck southbound on U.S. Route 59 at approximately 6:51 a.m. when it collided with a northbound Freightliner semi-tractor near milepost 344.

The teen, whose identity has not been released, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the semi-truck, identified as 61-year-old Robert Grant Nichols of LaPorte, was not injured.

FATAL SEMI-TRUCK ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Multiple factors may contribute to tractor-trailer crashes, including driver fatigue, mechanical issues, and loss of vehicle control.

Candice Bond, a seasoned tractor-trailer accident attorney, stated that an independent investigation should be initiated promptly in cases like this to safeguard the rights of a victim’s family.

“Crashes involving tractor-trailers are frequently complex and may involve numerous contributing factors,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “An experienced attorney can shield a grieving family from trucking companies, which often deploy their own investigators and substantial resources to defend a negligent truck driver. Legal counsel can advocate for families by retaining expert witnesses, reviewing driver histories, identifying witnesses, evaluating insurance coverage, and guiding clients through each stage of the legal process.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,788 people were killed in crashes involving large trucks in 2021, representing a 17% increase from 2020. Additionally, 72% of those killed were occupants of other vehicles.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of the 18-year-old victim may be eligible to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families may seek compensation for loss of love and companionship, funeral expenses, emotional distress, and pain and suffering following a fatal accident.

“The grief and emotional strain following the loss of a loved one can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “Families face unimaginable challenges during these times, and protecting their legal rights is essential. A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the investigation and work to ensure that a family’s rights and best interests are fully protected.”
