Elijah Battiste killed after Hit-and-run accident in Seffner on SR 574

SEFFNER, FL, (April 11, 2026) — A 17-year-old high school senior tragically lost his life following a multi-vehicle crash involving a hit-and-run driver Saturday night in Seffner.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Elijah Battiste was driving a Volkswagen Passat westbound on State Road 574 just before 11 p.m. when a Nissan Versa traveling east crossed into the opposing lane and struck his vehicle.

Both vehicles came to rest in the roadway, where a Ford F-150 subsequently collided with the Volkswagen. The driver of the pickup fled the scene on foot and has not yet been located.

Battiste was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

FATAL HIT-AND-RUN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, shared her perspective on incidents like this.

“In addition to any criminal charges, a victim’s family may also pursue compensation through a civil lawsuit against the responsible party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal and a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Alongside law enforcement efforts, an attorney can re-interview witnesses, review surveillance footage from the crash scene, and obtain phone and text records of the liable driver.”

Bond further stated, “By serving as an advocate, an attorney can guide families with compassion during this difficult time, safeguarding their rights while ensuring that negligent drivers are held accountable.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported an estimated 737,100 hit-and-run crashes in the U.S. in 2015—about one every 43 seconds. Additionally, the 2,049 fatalities recorded in 2016 marked the highest number ever documented.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Depending on the findings of the investigation, the family of Elijah Battiste may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim, seeking damages for loss of companionship, funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and pain and suffering.

“It is essential for families to retain an attorney when filing a wrongful death claim, as legal counsel can negotiate with insurance companies on their behalf,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel at Bond Legal.

He added, “Insurance companies often attempt to pressure families into accepting quick settlements that do not reflect the true value of their loss. An attorney will advocate to ensure families are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
