Elden Ragsdale dies in Cowlitz County rollover accident

KELSO, WA (April 18, 2026) — An 18-year-old passenger was killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday evening near Kelso, according to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said Elden Ragsdale, of Longview, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old that overturned at approximately 8 p.m. in the 200 block of Maranatha Road.

Ragsdale, a senior at Mark Morris High School, suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Three additional passengers in the vehicle were injured, though their conditions have not been released.

Officials stated that once the investigation is completed, the case will be forwarded to the Cowlitz County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for potential criminal charges.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

Authorities are expected to release a detailed report once the investigation into the crash that claimed the life of Elden Ragsdale is complete, leaving his family mourning a tragic loss.

Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal, emphasized that incidents like this often require an independent investigation to help preserve evidence and protect the rights of grieving families.

“Beyond the work conducted by law enforcement, an attorney can revisit key witness statements, review any available surveillance footage, and obtain phone and messaging records of the responsible party,” Bond said, a national analyst for Accident Injury News. “Acting as an advocate, an attorney can guide families through this difficult period while ensuring their legal rights and best interests are safeguarded.”

Each year, approximately 36,000 people lose their lives and another 1.9 million are injured in motor vehicle accidents across the United States. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that leading causes of fatal crashes include speeding, impairment due to alcohol or drugs, failure to maintain lane position, failure to yield, and distracted driving.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

The family members of Elden Ragsdale may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of victims can seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a devastating accident.

“We understand the immense challenges families face after such a loss, and protecting their rights is essential,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal. “A wrongful death attorney will remain informed about the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s best interests are fully represented. Loved ones are entitled to pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after a tragic incident.”
