Edward Luyo struck, killed in Queens hit-and-run collision

QUEENS, NY, (March 31, 2026) – A 44-year-old man died after being struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday afternoon in Queens, authorities said.

According to the New York City Police Department, Edward Luyo was hit by a 2015 gray Nissan Versa just after 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Whitney Avenue and Macnish Street.

The driver fled the scene. Luyo was transported to NYC Health and Hospitals/Elmhurst, where he later died from his injuries.

Police arrested the suspected driver approximately three hours later and charged him with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to exercise due care. A fundraiser has been established to assist Luyo’s family with funeral expenses.

CRASH INVESTIGATION NEEDED

By law, any motorist involved in a crash must remain at the scene until authorities arrive. However, some drivers flee due to intoxication, lack of a license, or fear of legal consequences.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), between 2018 and 2022, more than 4 million people were involved in hit-and-run crashes, including over 12,000 fatalities.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized that in such cases, it is critical to have an independent investigation conducted promptly to protect the rights of victims.

“Having the proper resources is essential to investigate a hit-and-run case and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Factors such as road conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting must all be carefully evaluated. These steps are necessary to help victims or their families pursue justice and fair compensation.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the investigation, the family of Edward Luyo may be entitled to a wrongful death claim. Families may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following such a tragic accident.

“The grief and emotional burden after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal.

“Families of wrongful death victims have the right to pursue damages for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress after such a devastating incident.”
