Edward Garcia Hurt in Deerfield Township, Ohio Wreck

Deerfield Township, OH (July 2, 2026) — One person died and another was seriously injured early Thursday morning in a solo-vehicle crash on Interstate 71 in Deerfield Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).

Authorities said a northbound 2026 Kia K4 ran off the roadway near mile marker 23 and crashed into a concrete bridge overpass at approximately 2:33 a.m. The vehicle then careened off the overpass, struck a utility pole, and landed on Western Row Road.

A passenger, identified as 30-year-old Edward Garcia of Corona, California, was seriously injured and taken to UC West Chester Hospital for treatment. The 25-year-old California man who was driving died at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Roughly 2.2 million people were injured in motor vehicle crashes nationwide in 2023, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The NHTSA identifies speeding as the top cause of traffic crashes, with impairment from alcohol, drugs, or medication, improper lane usage, failure to yield, and distracted driving also ranking among the leading contributing factors.

“Determining the precise cause of accidents like this is critical. An attorney has the resources to examine applicable insurance coverage, bring in expert witnesses, conduct background checks, and track down witnesses. We work to carefully guide the victim’s family through the entire process,” said Candice Bond, Managing Partner at Bond Legal.

She added that in cases such as this, launching an independent investigation as soon as possible is key to better preserving available evidence.

“Beyond the police report, an attorney will take a close look at what may have contributed to the crash,” added Bond, an experienced auto accident attorney. “A lawyer has the resources to hire expert witnesses, look into drivers’ backgrounds, locate witnesses to the crash, and review any applicable insurance coverage. Acting as an advocate, an attorney can help guide an injury victim through what is often a complicated process.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Depending on the results of the investigation, Edward Garcia may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the stress and worry following a serious injury can be overwhelming, disrupting nearly every part of life — including family, work, finances, and overall quality of life.

“It’s essential for victims to have an attorney on their side when filing a personal injury claim, as it allows them to negotiate with insurance companies on their behalf,” Formica added.

“Insurance companies are often indifferent to the mounting costs an injured person may face. That’s where an attorney can step in. We work every day to protect victims of these tragedies, holding insurance companies accountable for their mistakes,” he added.
