Ed Ashman injured in Lake Forest after e-bike rider flees CA

LAKE FOREST, CA, (April 16, 2026) – An 81-year-old man was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash Thursday afternoon in Lake Forest.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Ed Ashman was struck by a 14-year-old riding an e-bike at approximately 4 p.m. near the intersection of Toledo Way and Ridge Route Drive, close to El Toro High School.

Authorities said the teen fled the scene immediately after the collision but was later located and taken into custody.

Ashman sustained severe injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Officials confirmed that a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with his medical expenses. The investigation is ongoing.

HIT-AND-RUN CRASH INVESTIGATION

California records tens of thousands of hit-and-run crashes each year, many of which result in serious injuries or fatalities, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety.

Leaving the scene of an accident is a criminal offense, yet approximately 11 percent of all crashes involve a hit-and-run driver. Suspects often flee due to intoxication, lack of a valid license, or fear of arrest.

Candice Bond, an experienced hit-and-run accident attorney, emphasized that in cases like this, it is critical to have an independent investigation conducted by an experienced lawyer to protect the victim’s rights.

“Having the proper resources is essential to investigate a hit-and-run case and establish negligence,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal. “Roadway conditions, visibility of signage, and lighting are all contributing factors that must be carefully evaluated. These steps are vital in helping victims or their families pursue justice and financial compensation.”

PERSONAL INJURY CLAIM

Ed Ashman may have the right to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. Stefano Formica, Of Counsel with Bond Legal, noted that the stress and uncertainty following a serious injury can be overwhelming, impacting all aspects of life, including family, employment, and finances.

“It is important for victims to retain an attorney when filing a personal injury claim so that negotiations with insurance companies are handled effectively,” Formica said. “Insurance companies often attempt to settle claims quickly for less than their true value, but an attorney will advocate to ensure fair treatment and appropriate compensation.”
