Ector County Intersection Crash Claims Life of Derek Pearson

ECTOR COUNTY, TX (January 07, 2026) — A Wednesday evening collision involving a semi-truck in Ector County resulted in the death of a 49-year-old man, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Officials said Derek Wayne Pearson of Bellville was driving a 2022 Ford F-250 westbound on State Highway 302 at approximately 7:30 p.m. when a southbound 2024 Peterbilt 567 ran a stop sign at Farm-to-Market 866 and struck the pickup’s trailer.

Emergency responders pronounced Pearson dead at the scene. Authorities reported that the 39-year-old New Mexico man driving the Peterbilt was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

According to the Federal Highway Administration, about 40 percent of traffic crashes occur at roadway intersections, most commonly due to drivers failing to stop at stop signs or traffic signals. Factors such as impatience, reckless driving, and distracted driving frequently contribute to these incidents.

Collisions involving large commercial vehicles can be especially severe, as semi-trucks may weigh up to 80,000 pounds.

The National Safety Council estimates that roughly 150,000 people are injured in large truck crashes each year, with approximately 4,900 fatalities occurring annually.

Candice Bond, a Managing Partner with Bond Legal and an experienced commercial accident attorney, emphasized the importance of a prompt, independent investigation in cases involving commercial vehicles.

“Crashes involving commercial trucks are often complex and can involve multiple contributing factors,” Bond said.

“A knowledgeable attorney can help protect victims from trucking companies that may dispatch their own investigators to the scene and have extensive resources to defend negligent drivers. Counsel can advocate for victims by retaining expert witnesses, conducting driver background checks, locating witnesses, and reviewing insurance coverage while carefully guiding families through the legal process.”

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the family of Derek Pearson may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. Families of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of companionship, pain and suffering, and emotional distress following a tragic accident.

“The emotional strain after losing a loved one in an accident can be overwhelming,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal.

“We understand the challenges families face, and ensuring their legal rights are protected is essential. A wrongful death attorney will stay informed of the official investigation and work to safeguard a family’s best interests,” Formica said.

“An attorney can also help protect families from large insurance companies and their legal teams by thoroughly reviewing the facts of the crash and advocating aggressively on their behalf,” he added.
