Earl Glenn Dies After Myrtle Beach Scooter Collision, Police Say

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (May 17, 2026) — The Myrtle Beach Police Department is investigating a fatal collision involving a passenger vehicle and a moped that occurred Sunday on 48th Avenue North.

According to authorities, officers and emergency responders were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a crash involving a small motorized scooter.

When patrol officers arrived, they found the moped operator lying on the roadway with life-threatening injuries. Paramedics immediately began emergency treatment at the scene before transporting the victim to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard later identified the victim as 38-year-old Earl Glenn of Myrtle Beach.

Medical personnel pronounced Glenn dead at approximately 8 p.m., officials said.

Police have not released details regarding the vehicle involved in the collision or confirmed whether the driver remained at the scene following the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing.

CRASH INVESTIGATION

Traditional moped and scooter crashes continue to show troubling safety trends. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that riders face a fatal injury risk approximately 35 times greater than occupants of passenger vehicles. A long-term study examining 5,660 moped crashes found that more than 90% of operators were uninsured, while only 17% wore helmets. Researchers also determined that alcohol and drug use increased the risk of severe injury by 209%.

Research from UC San Francisco has shown a dramatic rise in electric scooter accidents, increasing from 8,566 injuries in 2017 to 56,847 in 2022, representing an annual increase of 45%. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 169,300 emergency room visits tied to e-scooters between 2017 and 2022, accounting for nearly 47% of all micromobility-related injuries.

Candice Bond, an experienced moped accident attorney, emphasized the importance of launching an independent investigation quickly in order to preserve evidence in cases like this.

“Having the proper resources is extremely important when investigating a moped or scooter accident and establishing negligence by another party,” said Bond, Managing Partner of Bond Legal.

“In addition to the efforts of law enforcement, an attorney has the ability to consult expert witnesses, conduct background investigations, and review available insurance coverage,” added Bond, who also serves as a National Legal Analyst for Accident Injury News.

WRONGFUL DEATH CLAIM

“It is generally the responsibility of drivers to yield to pedestrians and vulnerable roadway users,” said Stefano Formica, of counsel at Bond Legal. The victim’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

“Relatives of wrongful death victims may seek compensation for loss of income and companionship, pain and suffering, funeral expenses, and emotional distress following a tragic accident,” Formica said.

Serving as an advocate, an attorney can compassionately assist a grieving family during this difficult period while helping protect their legal rights.

“Insurance companies often attempt to pressure victims into accepting quick settlements for significantly less than a claim may actually be worth,” Formica noted. “An attorney will strongly advocate for clients to help ensure they are treated fairly and receive appropriate compensation.”
